Lauren Kelly - Paris BIA, Fall 2009

family visits, France, Paris BIA
Just after my last blog post, my little bit of home arrived in Paris -
my grandmother and mom visited!

It was a strange feeling, being at once tour guide and tourist, but it
was perfect because I was able to show them “my” Paris and be a part
of their adventures. I showed them the IES center, ate a delicious
lunch with my host family, and had an equally tasty dinner with my
friends from the program. When I took them to the Eiffel Tower, it was
so cool to see the delight on their faces as they marveled at the
enormity of the iconic structure and saw the magic of the light show
for the first time. Then I became a tourist again when we visited
Invalides to see the Dome Church where Napoleon is buried, went to
evening Mass at Notre Dame, and took a tour of the ornate Opera
Garnier.
We had some crazy experiences also, mostly related to the language
barrier, which is obviously the most challenging and frustrating part
of being in a foreign country. Although I am now much better at
communicating with Parisians, I still do not know enough French to
argue with anyone. It’s a helpless feeling, when the cab driver starts
the meter the moment you enter the vehicle, pretends he has no idea
where you are asking him to take you, and then refuses to give you the
correct change. Though it was a relatively small problem, it can be
overwhelming whenever I find myself in situations that I could easily
handle in the States and struggle to fix in Paris. (In case anyone
needs another example of a typically trivial but now rather difficult
issue, opening milk cartons and finding peanut butter are impossible
in this city.)

All in all, I hope my mom and grandma enjoyed their visit as much as I
did. One evening when we were out to dinner, our waiter pointed first
to my grandmother, then to my mom, and then to me and asked us, “Mère,
fille, et petite-fille?” I think how lucky I felt during their fives
days with me can be seen in my one word answer: “Oui!” Yes, mother,
daughter, and granddaughter, together in Paris. How many people can
say that?

My mother and grandmother visited me while I was living in Paris
as well! It was such a wonderful (and often comical) experience!
