so shortly after its successful run at the Film Forum.

Filed under: pir, policy - 23 Feb 2010
ISOC-NY would like to congratulate both Kathy Kleiman and the Public

noted on the PIR blog, Kathy has long stood up for the interests and
rights of the the Internet using public, not only as a co-founder of
the Noncommercial Users Constituency of ICANN (of which ISOC-NY is a
member), but in countless other ways. That she will now have the
opportunity to pursue such interests full-time on behalf of the .org

NEW TECHNIQUE DEVELOPED TO IDENTIFY CHEATING IN ONLINE GAMES
------------------------------------------------------------
Filed under: isoc, security - 02 Feb 2010

NDSS 2010WASHINGTON, D.C., USA and GENEVA, SWITZERLAND–2 February
2010–In a paper scheduled to be presented at the upcoming 17th Annual
Network and Distributed System Security Symposium (NDSS 2010), Darrell
Bethea, Robert Cochran, and Michael Reiter of the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill describe a technique they have developed to
identify cheating in the rapidly growing, multi-billion dollar
industry of online gaming which includes titles such as World of
Warcraft. The full paper will be published in the NDSS Proceedings.
Cheating through the use of non-sanctioned client software compromises
the gaming experience for players and undermines the revenue of game
developers and operators. The approach outlined in the paper to be
presented at NDSS 2010 could help ensure the integrity of the online
gaming experience by providing an automated, alternative approach to
current, manually programmed methods of identifying game cheats. The
described approach is server-based and does not increase the required
bandwidth, often a critical expense for game operators.

Webcast: ISOC-DC discussion “Choices for the Smart Grid”
--------------------------------------------------------
Filed under: development, isoc-dc, policy, webcast - 29 Jan 2010

On Jan 20 2010 the DC area members of the Internet Society held a
discussion: “Choices for the Smart Grid“. The electric power grid–and
the appliances in your home–are being networked, enabling electric
utilities to better control electric power generation, consumption,
and distribution–and give consumers ways to save energy and money. But
it is not clear how the Smart Grid will develop. Will the Smart Grid
be fully integrated with the Internet or will proprietary technologies
and security concerns make that difficult? What steps will be needed
to ensure the security of the Smart Grid? How will the Smart Grid
interoperate with home networks and other systems? Will each utility
and each country adopt different approaches or will there be global
standards–and who will set those standards?
Details, slides and video below:

ISOC-NY Net Neutrality Poll
---------------------------
Do you support Net Neutrality regulations?

No! I believe that the Internet should remain unregulated.
Hell yes! I support the FCC's six principles and H.R. 3458.

Yes, but! I support the FCC's six principles, but not
 legislation..
Neither! The Government should increase user choice through
 functional and/or structural separation
