Vitamin D refers to a fat soluble prohormone and its metabolites. When taken in excessive amounts, vitamin D will be stored in body fat and metabolized leading to excessive amounts of metabolites in the body. If the excessive dosage of Vitamin D continues for too long, the metabolites will become toxic to the body. An overdose of vitamin D is not easy to achieve and it is thought that only by taking excessive amounts of manufactured vitamin D can a person reach toxic levels. Although vitamin D is produced naturally in the body when exposed to sunlight, there comes a point of saturation after which the skin ceases to produce any more.
Most reported cases of vitamin D overdose involve children whose daily requirements are far less than an adult's. These children have usually taken excessive amounts of vitamin D as a dietary supplement. Sometimes a vitamin D overdose will occur because of a miscalculation when using multiple vitamin supplements. Pharmacies may also make a mistake when preparing prescriptions which can lead to overdose. Because Vitamin D is fat soluble and not water soluble, the body stores it for later use. Unfortunately, there is no agreement in the medical community on a "safe" level of Vitamin D for adults or children. To avoid overdose, it is best to avoid dietary supplements and to rely instead upon foods rich in Vitamin D like fish or eggs.
It is easy to confuse the vague and transitory symptoms of vitamin D overdose with symptoms of unrelated disorders. Doctors test for vitamin D overdose if blood serum levels of the vitamin D metabolite calcidiol are above normal. Levels of calcidiol can be up to 15 times the normal level in severe cases of vitamin D overdose.
