The division opened its doors two years ago and is designed to provide
campus-wide services for students, faculty, and staff and to serve as
a gathering point for like-minded colleagues. Faculty from colleges
and research units across campus -- including Business, Communication,
Education, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Liberal Arts, Natural
Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Affairs, Social Work and the Texas
Advanced Computing Center - have joined in this initiative.

Please explore our website further to learn about the many services
offered through the division. The division coordinates a suite of
undergraduate and graduate courses designed to address the needs of
students in different disciplines. We also provide consulting services
for UT students, faculty and staff, bring prominent faculty to campus
as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series, and organize Summer
Statistics Institute each year in May
Our hope is that you find the division welcoming and our services
useful. We invite you to explore the opportunities available through

Why Statistics and Scientific Computation?
------------------------------------------
Statistics unlike many other fields, is inherently interdisciplinary.
The available statistical tools and methodologies, which are
continually advancing through research, have applications in virtually
every discipline. To name just a few...social science researchers use
statistical modeling to examine hypotheses regarding the effectiveness
of treatments influencing human behavior and the complex relationships
and interactions among variables. Health professionals use similar
methods to study the impacts of medicinal treatments. Engineers use
statistical techniques and simulations to model uncertainty in product
design and measure system reliability. Business analysts study risk in
financial flows and decision making. Meteorologists use statistical
models to predict weather patterns.

Scientific computation is the use of mathematical, statistical and
computer-based techniques to investigate complex systems. It has
applications in science, engineering, economics, medicine, sociology
and many other disciplines. For example, scientific computation has
helped us to understand the causes and effects of climate change,
financial catastrophes, and the motions of stars, to optimize the
performance of mechanical systems, to model the human brain, to
control the spread of disease, and to develop more effective
medicines.
