Health care administrators work in the offices of hospitals, clinics,
nursing homes and private practices. Most health care administrators
work their way up through management as they continue their education
to become top administrators. A health information administrator is in
charge of patient records and must maintain legal, medical and ethical
standards at all times.
Entry Level

1.  Jobs that will provide experience for those looking for
  advancement in health information management and administration
  include medical coding, billing clerks and health information
  techs. Professionals often start in entry-level positions to gain
  experience while they pursue advanced degrees. Most clerical
  positions in healthcare facilities pay hourly rates that range
  from $9 to $15. Advancement from within is a common practice in
  the healthcare information industry.
Manager

2.  Medical records managers oversee the clerical entry-level staff
  in large healthcare institutions. They are proficient in billing
  and coding procedures, current technology practices and patient
  privacy laws. Managers in health information departments of large
  hospitals make an average of $48,000 per year. They typically have
  a bachelor's degree and have worked in medical offices to gain
  record-keeping experience.
Certification

3.  Following the completion of a four-year degree in health
  information systems or healthcare management, graduates can take
  the national registration exam provided by the American Health
  Information Management Association. Registered health information
  administrators (RHIA) typically work as managers and oversee staff
  that maintains accurate records on insurance claims, legal actions
  and treatment records. Pay ranges from $52,000 to $82,000 per
  year.
Administrator

4.  Executive positions in health information administration are
  held by professionals with a master's degree in health services
  information, the health sciences or public health. Many earn a
  master's in business administration (MBA) with an emphasis in
  healthcare management. Salaries top $100,000 annually for the top
  executives who oversee the entire records management operation.
  Department heads in larger facilities may move up the hospital
  ranks as they pursue advanced degrees and come from the nursing
  field, accounting, human resources or facility management.
Tech Administrator

5.  The information technology (IT) health information administrator
  is in charge of the computers that operate the vast record-keeping
  obligations of healthcare facilities. IT administrators typically
  come up through the ranks as well and earn degrees in healthcare
  information technology as well as business administration.
  Administrators who oversee the hardware and software platforms in
  healthcare facilities earn an average of $75,000 per year.
