DESIGN FOR MENTAL HEALTH
========================

About Design for Mental Health
------------------------------

Design for Mental Health Introduction Photo
The London team is working to improve mental health care through
design thinking. According to UK statistics, 1 in every 4 people
will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course
of any one year. In the UK, that amounts to 6 million people (not
including those who choose not to seek medical advice). The design
team is investigating how design can help to better mental health
and the mental health therapy experience, focusing on self-help as
a viable method for mental improvement. Principles of mentoring
and support networks are also of interest to the team and are
being explored as a means to learn coping skills and improve
everyday life. Through research initiatives, partnerships,
interviews, and brainstorm sessions, the team hopes to help
multiple mental health institutions and organizations improve
their service and product offerings using creatively integrated
self-help programs. Current partners include Mind and the Tower
Hamlets Centre for Mental Health.

The London team has completed several prototype events of The
Sunday Social service, a weekend support group, and has submitted
a joint funding application with Mind in Tower Hamlets. The
service should be up and running on a regular basis starting
January 2010.
