Sean Lynch: Merced College women's title hopes tread water
==========================================================
Merced College women's swim coach Bill Halpin hasn't sugarcoated his
team's chances for a Bay Valley Conference title three-peat all
season.

After cruising to the crown the last two years, the Lady Devils are in
for a dogfight with College of the Sequoias.
MC still has the swimmers to be competitive, but it will rely on a lot
of second- and third-place showings to carry the day.

A rare dual meet loss to San Joaquin Delta last week hammered home
Halpin's point.

Of the 13 events, the Lady Devils only won five, with sophomores
Brittany Wilson and Kailey Carter accounting for all of them.
While the rest of his team may remain wildcards heading into April's
BVC Championships, Halpin does at least know what he's going to get
out of his sophomore tandem.

Wilson -- MC's 100-yard freestyle record holder -- won the 50, 100 and
500 freestyle races. Carter -- MC's 50 breaststroke record holder --
added wins in the 100 IM and the 50 backstroke.
With both swimmers setting season-best times in every race, a few more
records may be in jeopardy of falling this season.

"That's basically what we came into this year saying," Wilson said.
"We were hoping to pick up where we left off. It's what we've trained
for since last year.
"We know the conference championships are going to be a lot more
competitive, but if anything, that would make winning three in a row
more meaningful.

"Kailey and I know what we're supposed to do, but the whole team has
come a really long way too.
"We're very capable of pulling some surprises."

United we fall Losing often tells you more about a team's makeup than
winning ever will. It's easy for players to get along when things are
going well.
Few, however, can hold it together when things go unexpectedly wrong.
The Merced College softball team appears to be among them.

The She-Devils couldn't have predicted their 3-21 start, but the
adversity appears to have brought them closer together.
It's tough to attend an on-campus event and not spot a group of
She-Devils. Saturday's MC baseball game was no exception.

All decked out after attending softball coach Suzanne Burrola's
wedding in the morning, a group of softball players clustered together
at Blue Devil Diamond while waiting for the reception to begin later
that day.
Spring without the break

The Merced College baseball team is headed south for sunnier skies.
The Blue Devils will take a little break from the Central Valley
Conference schedule to do battle with some of Southern California's
best in the Allan Hancock Tournament.
MC opened the tournament with SoCal No. 7 Allan Hancock on Tuesday and
will take on No. 18 Cuesta today. The Blue Devils will finish up with
Cerritos on Thursday.
