Share 1. In the past, it was possible for a man to induce an erection by injecting himself with something called Phentolamine. This forced an erection, but caused health issues due to the manner in which the medicine was applied, via a needle. Viagra, however, is a much easier way to induce an erection. It comes in a pill form and, when taken, releases what is known as sildenafil citrate. This is the chemical responsible for creating a lasting erection in men with erectile dysfunction. Though the sildenafil citrate flows throughout the body, it has been created to target a certain enzyme found only in the penis.
2. This enzyme is phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), one of 11 types of phosphodiesterase. Pfizer, the company that creates Viagra, was able to target PDE5 alone, a breakthrough that allowed Viagra to do what it does. PDE5 takes what is called cGMP and breaks it down so that is unusable. CGMP is responsible for relaxing the smooth muscle in the arterial walls of the penis. When these smooth muscles are relaxed, pressurized blood is able to fill the penis, which is what causes an erection. 3. When a man becomes sexually aroused, the brain sends a message to special NANC cells in his penis. These cells are responsible for creating nitric oxide in the penis. This nitric oxide is what, in turn, creates cGMP. It is a normal process that is not affected by Viagra, but that does play an important role by giving the body something for Viagra to protect.
4. Men with erectile dysfunction lose a significantly large amount of cGMP to the PDE5 enzyme, causing reduced blood flow into the penis. The sildenafil citrate produced by Viagra, however, plugs the holes in the PDE5 in place of cGMP. This means that the enzyme will be busy breaking down sildenafil citrate instead. While this is happening, more cGMP will be roaming free, which means the smooth muscles of the penis will be more relaxed, and therefore there will be an increase in blood flow into the penis. 5. The increased blood flow into the penis will last as long as the sildenafil citrate is present in the body. This lasts about four hours for most individuals. For some, however, it could last longer, and there have been cases of men having to go to the hospital to help get rid of their erection. It is just one of the side effects that Viagra can cause, which is why it is important to check with your doctor to make sure Viagra is a drug that is safe for you to take.
