Recommend Who isn't looking for ways to cut corners on prescription drug costs - even when it comes to buying pet meds? But be careful, veterinarian Patty Khuly warns in a USA TODAY column about buying drugs from internet pharmacies.
"Pet pharmacies are not regulated the same way human pharmacies are. If the FDA and the DEA have trouble keeping human pharmacies on the level, what do you think veterinary pharmacies get treated to? Because unless you're a priceless polo pony, these online outlets know that the legal ramifications of your pet's drug reactions can't touch companies of their size. And because as long as counterfeits and questionable expiration dates abound in the online pet drug marketplace, it's buyer beware all the way. "That's one reason veterinarians are leery of scripting out meds. But the other is that — yes, of course — we want to keep this income in-house. Our profit structures, unfortunately, have long been built around this revenue source. Which means that as much as you complain about the price of your drugs, we vets grouse about the pharmacies that undercut us and skew the economics that define our practices. "
Plus, Khuly says vets could mark their services higher and lower the meds. In a Q&A on the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) website, they also warn about the dangers of buying drugs online but offer this advice for finding a pharmacy that is credible.
"We haven't found a fool-proof way to assure a 'good' pharmacy. That's why the AVMA acknowledges a program called "Vet-VIPPS," a voluntary certification program created by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. The Vet-VIPPS seal of approval identifies those online pharmacies that are, according to NABP, appropriately licensed, are legitimately operating via the Internet, and that have successfully completed a rigorous criteria review and inspection. If you do experience problems, you should report the pharmacy to the Boards of Pharmacy in your state and the pharmacy's state." Want to know more about Vet-Vipps? Learn to identify their seal.
