Certified Medical Aide Job Description, Job Duties and Salary Info
==================================================================

In order to become a certified medical aide, one must obtain formal
medical training and pass a national certification exam. A certified
medical aide is educated to perform both administrative and clinical
tasks.
Certified Medical Aide Job Description

A certified medical aide (CMA), also known as certified medical
assistant, must undergo formal training or obtain an applied science
associate's degree, and he or she must also pass a national
certification exam. They act as assistants to physicians in nursing
homes and hospitals, and they are supervised by registered nurses. The
patients that CMAs work with often have stable health and need only
routine check-ups and dosages of medication.
Certified Medical Aide Job Duties

Certified medical assistants are taught how to act in both
administrative and clinical roles in a health care environment. Some
of the administrative tasks they perform may be patient billing,
scheduling, filing insurance claims, database entry, outside
referrals, calling in prescriptions, desk reception, maintaining
medical and financial records, processing mail and purchasing supplies
or equipment.
With experience, certified medical aides may be relied upon to perform
more duties such as checking patient vitals, recording patient
interviews and histories, offering patients advice on special diets
and disease management, performing routine tests, assisting physicians
with minor surgeries, performing basic lab tests, preparing and
administering medicine. He or she may gain job duties such as applying
or removing bandages, stitches, splints and casts, and first aid
procedures.

Certified Medical Aide Salary Information
There are no official reports of certified medical aide wages;
however, a comparable position is a physician assistant, for which
extensive training and a national examination is also required. A
physician assistant salary depends on the industry in which the
assistant is hired and his or her level of experience. According to
the May 2008 reports by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physician
assistants' mean wage estimates were $81,610 annually. The industries
that pay physician assistants the most are employment services,
specialty hospitals and outpatient care centers.
