A certified medical aide is educated to perform both administrative and clinical tasks.
Certified Medical Aide Job Description A certified medical aide (CMA), also known as certified medical assistant, must undergo formal training or obtain an applied science associate's degree, and he or she must also pass a national certification exam. They act as assistants to physicians in nursing homes and hospitals, and they are supervised by registered nurses. The patients that CMAs work with often have stable health and need only routine check-ups and dosages of medication.
Certified Medical Aide Job Duties Certified medical assistants are taught how to act in both administrative and clinical roles in a health care environment. Some of the administrative tasks they perform may be patient billing, scheduling, filing insurance claims, database entry, outside referrals, calling in prescriptions, desk reception, maintaining medical and financial records, processing mail and purchasing supplies or equipment.
With experience, certified medical aides may be relied upon to perform more duties such as checking patient vitals, recording patient interviews and histories, offering patients advice on special diets and disease management, performing routine tests, assisting physicians with minor surgeries, performing basic lab tests, preparing and administering medicine. He or she may gain job duties such as applying or removing bandages, stitches, splints and casts, and first aid procedures. Certified Medical Aide Salary Information
There are no official reports of certified medical aide wages; however, a comparable position is a physician assistant, for which extensive training and a national examination is also required. A physician assistant salary depends on the industry in which the assistant is hired and his or her level of experience. According to the May 2008 reports by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, physician assistants' mean wage estimates were $81,610 annually.
