The 2009 LTC HIT Summit is the leading conference on critical health
IT and EHR initiatives for the post-acute and LTC industry. This
year’s summit takes an important step by showcasing HIT standards in
action through a variety of interoperability demonstrations. The
Summit provides a thought-provoking, cutting-edge mix of strategies,
updates on current industry initiatives, research, HIT education, and
technology vendor interaction. If you work in post-acute and long-term
care, this is the premier Health IT conference to attend.

Invitation to Submit Case Studies
Summit co-sponsors, strategic partners, attendees and vendors are
invited to submit case studies related to successful HIT
implementation in LTC. Case studies may, but are not required to,
address one or more summit sessions and areas of interest: business
case/funding, quality initiatives, research and benchmarking,
standards, medication safety and e-prescribing, chronic care/wellness
management, and emerging issues. Submissions were due by May 1, 2009,
to nrobinson@amda.com.

Keynote—New Technology or New Business Model? Translating HIT into
Innovations in Long-Term Care
The Wall Street Journal named Joe Coughlin one of America’s 12
pioneers inventing the future of retirement and aging. This year he
brings his research, vision and humor to the LTC HIT Summit program to
discuss the role of technology and, the opportunity for innovations to
improve the quality of life of older adults and their families. Dr.
Coughlin’s own research focuses on how the convergence of baby boomer
expectations and technology will shape the future of public policy and
drive innovation across global industries.

Speaker: Joe Coughlin, PhD, Founder and Director of the MIT Age Lab
9:30–10 a.m.

New President, New Secretary, New Vision: The Transition for HIT and
Impact on Aging Services
President Obama has indicated that reforming the healthcare system
will be a primary focus of his administration, and that accelerating
the use of HIT is a necessary tool for reforming the healthcare
delivery system in the US. This includes enabling necessary
improvements in quality and coordination of care, increasing
efficiencies, and decreasing unnecessary costs. In addition, Congress
included several significant HIT provisions in the economic stimulus
package. This session will focus on what is happening to advance the
use of HIT and reform the healthcare delivery system, with a focus on
persons who require LTC services.
Speaker: Charles Friedman, PhD, Deputy National Coordinator, Office of
the National Coordinator for Health IT

The Impact of the Stimulus Investment Package on LTC HIT
The economic stimulus bill makes significant investments targeting
numerous areas of the US economy, including healthcare and HIT. In
this session, learn about the types of HIT investments included in the
bill (such as implementation and evaluation grants, and incentives),
their relevance to LTC, implications for LTC providers and HIT
vendors, and critical gaps that must be filled to advance HIT
implementation on behalf of persons receiving LTC.

The Future State–Where We Need to Go
Strategists have long said, “You have to decide where you want to go
and what it looks like before you start spending money on tasks.” This
panel will present visions on what LTC might look like at the end of
2014, the year President Obama stated he wanted interoperability and
interconnectivity of the healthcare system. There will be a discussion
on the effect of legislation as well as the regulation external forces
will have on the vision. Additionally, the possible stages of
transformation of LTC HIT to achieve the 2014 vision will be
discussed.

consumer health information during shared care (that is, through an
external or consulting physician, nurse, and care facility) and
transfer of care.
The Stimulus and Healthcare Reform
How does the stimulus package and healthcare reform change the focus
and priorities of the LTC HIT Roadmap? How should aging services
providers position themselves on this topic? Participate in a
discussion that will help inform and update the Roadmap and set new
priorities.

Facilitators: Cynthia E. Berry, Counsel
Bryan Cave, LLP Michelle Dougherty, MA, RHIA, CHP, AHIMA

10:50–11:35 a.m.
Medical Home and Telehealth
The future vision of healthcare includes comprehensive care that is
facilitated and coordinated through a single entity. This vision of
the “medical home” is critical for individuals requiring LTC. The use
of health information such as telehealth consults and remote
monitoring and electronic transmission of health data is necessary to
ensure the success of a medical home. This session will provide
insight into current projects to support the medical home model and
new telehealth technologies that improve care quality and
coordination.

Speaker:
MaryJo Vetter, Director of New Clinical Product Development, VNSNY
Christina Coons

E-Prescribing and Medication Management
This session discusses interoperability implications of e-prescribing
and medication management, including eMAR. Systems will allow multiple
providers to have access to complete medication lists, coverage, and
drug-drug interaction checking, and facilitate medication management
in different care settings.
Exploring Privacy and Workforce Issues
The LTC HIT Roadmap hasn’t addressed privacy and workforce issues, yet
both have emerged as critical issues for meeting the goal of EHRs by
2014. This session explores both issues and identifies new priorities
for the next roadmap.

Facilitators:
Michelle Dougherty, AHIMA

David Lipsky, Cornell University
11:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

E-Prescribing and e-MAR Implementation
The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA)
mandated e-prescribing incentives starting in 2009. While research has
demonstrated the benefits of e-prescribing and e-MAR solutions, LTC
providers are faced with very practical questions about: what to
consider in selecting an IT solution, what trade-offs should be
considered, and what are realistic expectations of resource investment
and time to results? This session will highlight implementation
experiences, successes, failures, and lessons learned, from
e-prescribing and e-MAR implementation efforts.
Speaker:
Beth Cavallaro, Lead Quality Implementation Consultant NewCourtland
eRx and President Strategic Solutions, LLC

facilitate the interoperability between EMRs/ EHRs and Personal Health
Records, including Patient Portal based EHR systems. Particular
discussion regarding patient and family roles and readiness.
Business Case and Emerging Business Models
This session explores and engages participants in dialogue about
business case issues and the new emerging business models for aging
services. Time will be spent discussing the potential for grants with
the stimulus package and the acquisition process.

Facilitator: John Derr, R.Ph, Chief Technology Strategic Officer,
Golden Living, Lorin Hitt, University of Pennsylvania Wharton School
12:30–1:30 p.m.

information from state initiatives that are shaping the direction of
healthcare and aging services. Hear the results of a recent State of
Technology report for LTC and findings from the ONC contract on
State-Level HIE issues. Speakers will explore the current and emerging
issues state Medicaid system face related to technology as well as the
stimulus package grants directed at state initiatives.
