Side Effects of Lipitor ======================= Print E-mail Q: I've read that Lipitor's side effects can include "brain fog" and trouble with short-term memory. I think I've been experiencing both. Can I safely go off the drug for a short period of time to see if it helps resolve these issues? — Louis, Texas Dr. Hai T. Tran A: Many side effects have been reported by people taking Lipitor or other statin medications to treat high cholesterol. These include the neurological side effects that you are experiencing: short-term memory loss, cognitive impairment, weakness, dizziness, headaches, insomnia, numbness, and burning sensations. There seems to be a mixture of results after stopping statin medication — over 50 percent of patients have some improvement in memory, while others do not show any improvement.
Symptoms such as you describe can be caused by many medical and nonmedical conditions. I would advise you to continue taking Lipitor and discuss these problems that you are having with your doctor to see what may be causing them. Together with your doctor, you can then make a plan that will help you manage both your cholesterol and any side effects that you are experiencing. Last Updated: 06/23/2008Pharmacist Hai T. Tran is an assistant professor of cancer medicine and pharmacology, with a joint appointment in the divisions of Cancer Medicine and Pharmacy, at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Most Recent Q&As
