Pauline W Chen Just say no to Nexium =====================
11 Mar 2003 I love ranting against Nexium. My housestaff know this is a pet peave. I am not alone!!! Medicare Head Tells Doctors Not to Prescribe Nexium
Thomas Scully, who heads the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services tore into the company over the purple pill, suggesting to doctors at an American Medical Association conference that the company was using the drug to rip off consumers and the government. “You should be embarrassed if you prescribe Nexium, because you’re screwing your patients and you’re screwing the taxpayers,” Scully said.
AstraZeneca gained Food and Drug Administration approval for Nexium (esomeprazole) in February, 2001. The new drug was widely seen as an important new revenue stream after a similar AstraZeneca ulcer drug, Prilosec, lost its patent exclusivity. Scully, who was integral in formulating the Bush Administration’s plan to finance a prescription drug benefit for Medicare beneficiaries, accused the company of “coming up with games” that keep patients paying for new, high-priced drugs.

Thanks Alex! Yes the world is slowly beginning to realise that Nexium is a crock of shit. It’s like launching the latest Ford and saying it’s better because it’s left hand drive instead of right hand drive. That’s the only difference between Nexium and Prilosec. Avatar

Unfortunately, Wisconsin is rushing to join Michigan and other states in a preferred drug list plan than requires prior authorization for generic omeprazole and NO prior authorization for Nexium. Thanks Mr Scully for bring some common sense to this issue. Avatar

Yeah, but I was prescribed Nexxium a year ago, when Prilosec stopped working for me! Told by a gastric guy that it wasn’t uncommon. And it took a double dose of Nexxium to do what a triple dose of Prilosec couldn’t do any more. The whole GERD thing is so frustratingbut, whatever little tweak was done, works for me.
I did super with no problems, when I was prescribed Prilosec, plus Propulsid. Lost weight, was able to descrease Prilosec. Then … because so many people were making mistakes with Propulsid, it was pulled off the market. FYI: The treament I was getting while on Propulsid was instrumental in my losing weight, as I could sleep all night. And yes, got the cardio workup and warned to double check ANY medication before I was put on it. Why were the other doctors too lazy?
Anyway, with Propulsid, sympthoms got worse and finally Prilosec stopped working. I’ve begged doctors to jump through the hoops to get it back for me, but to no avail. Part of the reason I’ve had trouble with weight gain, is I keep waking up from the GERD. Believe me, I’d love to be without any medication for GERD.

March 19th, 2003 at 10:53 am An endoscopy the other day revealed “very mild” gastritis (probably from taking Advil on an empty stomach), also “very mild” esophogial irritation from a bout with heartburn that I had during a particularly stressful period several months ago. The doc, who is does a great job with the endoscopy, does not do such a good job with followup and simply gave my husband on the way out a script for Nexium, with little direction. I have so many questions! First of all, I have lowish platelets, around 100,000. Does Nexium, like Tagamet, interfere with platelet counts. Secondly, is this drug really necessary??? If both problems are “mild,” and if I really don’t even feel heartburn anymore, can’t I a)change my behaviors and cure the gastritis and b)assume that the esophagial damage is from an old problem and that the esophagus will heal itself, given time? By the way, I am a 47-year-old woman who takes no scripts, who hates taking pharmaceuticals and likes to believe she can heal herself holistically — until something life-threatening comes along, at which point I will be grateful for life-saving drugs. I don’t see this situation as a life-threatening one. Thanks for listening and for whatever advice you can offer.

June 17th, 2003 at 2:16 pm I was diagnosed with GERD on 5/6/03, and given Nexium. I also made major life changes at the same time: eliminated all caffeine, alcohol, etc.) I soon started having symptoms that had not been present prior to the doctor’s appointment, the most serious was waking up at night with severe chest and stomach pains. I also experienced loss of appetite, and a loss of eight pounds in the month I took the drug. I had multiple trips to my primary doctor and the GI doctor, plus an ER visit with severe chest pains and high BP. No one considered my symptoms to be related to the Nexium; the focus was totally on possible heart attack. A diagnostic test on 5/28/03 (EGD) showed a small hiatal hernia, but no erosion in the esophagus. Since stopping the Nexium, the severe pains have stopped, but I continue to have a major acid rebround problem. My concerns are multiple: is there permanent damage in my stomach related to the use of Nexium. Where can I get assistance/information about this situation, since my primary doctor and GI doctor are non-responsive? I have searched the web, but haven’t found the information I need yet. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you for your assistance. Avatar

The only use for Nexium is cutting it in half and taking half a day. This method is even cheaper than prescribing omeprazole. Although, I am sticking to prescribing omeprazole for fears patients will just take the whole pill. I think banning the ability of a drug company to market an isomer as a “new product” is the only sensible thing to do.

June 28th, 2003 at 5:02 pm The current tv ads where they show how this food you are ordering is going to cause you so much heartburn and goes on to explain how this phony pill will make things better. Anyway you all know how inconsiderate this ad is to true acid reflux sufferers. It should be yanked off the air and this Nexium company censured. And there are others just as despicable!!. Don’t buy this product!!!!

June 28th, 2003 at 10:37 pm Hi..after reading some of the comments, I can say that we all have the same problems; doctors giving you a pill and not following up with treatment. I had several things wrong at the same time, and when Nexium didn’t fix the problem, I was assumed to be depressed and had chronic headaches, so I was treated for depression instead of stomach problems and guess what, nothing got better, after 4 years of being more depressed and having nausea so bad, I lost my job, and couldn’t work…so I finally changed doctors and found out that I had 3 different types of ulcers and were hard to detect, so finally I did get some releif, and I was given nexium without follow up and had terrible headaches. The nausea is releived but now other problems, doctors will not admit that the medication is just about as bad as the cure, and if you complain about systoms that are controling you, instead of the other way around and you want the doctor to do something, it’s the same thing; your depressed, you have too much stress and then they send you away to someone else with out figuring out what the problems are, that quite often the doctor creates with the medication that he gives you. What do you think????Judith

July 1st, 2003 at 11:16 am I have been taking nexium and have not had any of the problems mentioned by others. It is the only thing that has helped me with my heartburn. But I also do not want to have to take this for the rest of my life. I had never been given any kind of test to even check for ulcers. I was just told that treatment is the same and we do not test anymore. I had to argue with them in order to get a barium test done. I do not understand how the doctors can prescribe this without checking you out. A friend of mine had a similar problem and her doctor tested her and found her positive for h.pylori and she was treated and has not had a problem since with heartburn or acid reflux. My doctor tells me that h.pylori is not associated whatsoever with this. After doing internet research I see that h.pylori is associated with ulcers that can eventually lead to acid problems in the stomach which eventually can lead to heartburn and acid reflux. So what is the deal. Are we just supposed to take the pill forever and not question any further? If anybody has any better insight please let me know. My husband has suffered from this for years and I did not develope the problem until after we were together and I have found out the h.pylori is contracted from person to person from someone who is infected. It can be passed through kissing. It sounds to me like most of us could have been exposed to this at one time or another. But getting someone to test for the bacteria is a little harder to do.

July 2nd, 2003 at 3:43 pm I would like to know if there is any benefit or harm in taking advice from a physician that it is okay to take Nexium twice a day and also 10 mg of Metoclopramide twice a day. It seems like overkill to me. aag@wideopenwest.com

July 29th, 2003 at 1:21 pm Nexium has worked for me better than all of the OTC drugs and prilosec combined. It is a pain to have to take a drug every day, but I can eat and sleep in comfort again. Let them make their money, they earned it.

August 8th, 2003 at 6:47 am nexium once a day healed my esophagitis from gerd when prilosec did nothing. However, I am holding out on the hope that if I loose the 20 lbs I,ve gained in the last two years, maybe I won’t need it.

September 8th, 2003 at 3:20 pm Nexium works great for me but I’ve noticed a 10 pound weight gain in the two months since starting it. I don’t do anything different than I did before but my doctor says “exercise more.” I walk a fair bit. Frustrating.

September 23rd, 2003 at 7:43 pm I’ve had chest pains and upper back pain for over 3 months and after a positive barium test for acid reflux was prescribed nexium 40mg 2x a day + 10mg reglan 1x a day, After 2 weeks still having chest pain and back pain was given a mammography and 24ph test both showed neg. 3 weeks later still on nexium had sudden severe gastritis. Doc doesn’t know what caused it. Wonder if it was because i was on such a high dose of nexium for so long. Doc did an endoscopy and saw no signs of acid reflux so now says stop taking.

October 22nd, 2003 at 2:30 pm Nexxium worked immediately and completely for getting rid of my acid reflux. When I took Prilosec, it really bothered my stomach for two days then I felt some relief, and the OTC crap didnt do anything for me. I havent had any side effects whatsoever with Nexxium sofar but feel better than I have in years.
