If you decide to get your vitamin D level tested, you'll likely find that labs and physicians define a normal or "healthy" level of the vitamin differently. That's because the research just isn't strong enough to establish a consensus about how much of the vitamin we need circulating in our bodies to remain healthy.
The Cleveland Clinic, which does its own vitamin D testing, defines deficiency as a blood level below 30 nanograms per milliliter. Some labs put this level as low as 7 nanograms per milliliter, which the Clinic defines as "undetectable." The same applies for the category of "insufficiency," or borderline deficiency, which can range from 15 to 30 nanograms per milliliter depending on the lab.
While there may be a lot of confusion about the cutoff for deficiency, most researchers agree that blood levels above 30 are desirable, said Bruce Hollis, a nutritional biochemist at the Medical University of South Carolina who has been studying the vitamin for several decades. He aims to keep his own vitamin D level between 50 to 80 nanograms per milliliter (he needs a supplement of about 4,000 IU a day most of the year to do that). To put that in perspective, a person who has an outdoor job in Florida and is exposed to the sun most of the day would naturally have a blood level around 100 nanograms per milliliter in the summer without any supplementation, he said.
At this time of year, someone with a desk job in Cleveland who takes no supplements probably has a vitamin D blood level of around 15. "That's not deficient enough to get rickets, but a lot of data are suggesting it's not enough to satisfy the other tissue requirements your body has," Hollis said.
