Medical information technology, or medical informatics, schools prepare students to work as clinicians, researchers and information management personnel with hospitals, private practices, medical clinics and government agencies. Northwestern University, near Chicago, and the University of Washington, in Seattle, both offer graduate degree programs in medical informatics. Northwestern University in Evanston, IL Located approximately 12 miles north of Chicago, Northwestern University is one of the top-ranked schools in the country. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report named Northwestern the 12th best school in the nation. A Master of Science in Medical Informatics is available through collaboration between the School of Continuing Education and the Feinberg School of Medicine. Students in the program learn how to manage, organize and analyze medical patient records. Courses are offered in health care operations, medical decision support systems, legal issues within medical informatics and medical technology. Although the program has historically been offered on-campus, Northwestern will exclusively offer the program online in the fall of 2011.

In 2010, the University of Washington was named the 6th best medical school in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The public university offers more than 250 degree programs through 18 schools and colleges, including the School of Medicine, which offers a master's degree and Ph.D. in Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics. Courses in academic medicine, informatics research, public health and health care analysis teach students to apply technological theories to the organization and maintenance of health care policies and medical information.
