ultra cheap store-brand vitamins. They are also marketed under
"Nature's Bounty", "Vitamin World", and other brands. These brands
give absolutely no information about how they source their ingredients
or what quality control measures they use. You pretty much get what
you pay for, but for the same price as PP, you can get Solaray (very
clean formulas without a lot of crappy fillers added) or Source
Naturals which are on the bottom tier of the quality brands and are
significantly better.
Puritan's Pride ingredients are made in China, and dealing with
Chinese companies that are so called ISO 9001 certified does not
indicate the level of quality and control as the US USP verified
logo/sticker. In Costco, Berkley & Jensen brand vitamin have these
"USP vertified." Any pharmacology professor will tell you the best
vitamins to buy are "USP verified."

Last bottle of Puritan's Pride vitamin I bought must have been for
horses. They must put a lot of filler in the mult Calcium, Magnesium,
and Zinc supplement.

Do you guys have any evidence to back up these statements? If you're
going to make these kinds of inflammatory statements about a company,
you should at least backup your claims with some verifiable facts.
Everything that you have said contradicts what Puritan's Pride says
about their own manufacturing and quality control:
Each month, we produce 1.2 billion tablets, 500 million capsules and
450 million softgels - and we package over 14 million bottles! Our
commitment to quality is not only evident in where we manufacture our
products but also in the way we do it and the ingredients we use. In
many ways, Puritan's Pride has set the standard for high quality
vitamin manufacturing. The scientists and researchers in our
laboratories have worked closely with state and federal agencies,
including the FDA and the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), to establish many
of the test procedures that ensure the potency, stability and purity
of our products. Puritan's Pride also manufactures products under very
stringent GMPs (Good Manufacturing Standards) - a distinction that few
vitamin companies can claim.

I have Puritan's Pride vitamin bottles and there are no USP certified
logo/sticker on them. This is what the logo looks like here.

Here is your evidences concerning ingredients made in China:
http://www.secinfo.com/d11MXs.z1af8.c.htm

NBTY, Inc owns Puritain's Pride, Natures Bounty, Spring Valley,
VitaminWorld, and Metrx brands.
We are dependent on certain third-party suppliers.

We purchase from third-party suppliers certain important ingredients
and raw materials. The principal raw materials required in our
operations are vitamins, minerals, herbs, gelcaps and bottling
materials. We purchase the majority of our vitamins, minerals and
herbs from bulk manufacturers and distributors in the U.S., Japan,
China and Europe. Although raw materials are available from numerous
sources, an unexpected interruption of supply or material increases in
the price of raw materials, for any reason, such as regulatory
requirements, import restrictions, loss of certifications, power
interruptions, fires, hurricanes, war or other events could have a
material adverse effect on our business, results of operations,
financial condition and cash flows.

So only some of Puritan's Pride ingredients are made in China. Others
are supplied by US, Japanese and European suppliers. Nothing too
shocking there. Also, the fact that there parent company owns Natures
Bounty, Spring Valley, Vitamin World, and Metrx brands doesn't seem
too concerning either.

I think the USP is a great idea but so far none of the really big name
brands are participating. In fact, I believe the only big player that
is signed up is Pharmavite which is actually a Japanese owned company.
Pharmavite markets the Nature Made brand and also manufactures a lot
of private label brands including Berkley & Jensen (BJ's) and Kirkland
Signature (Costco) and others.

I don't know how reliable is consumerlab.com but their tests showed
good results for puritan's vitamins.
now, Kirkland vitamins has this USP logo but I doubt they are better
quality than Puritan's.
Actually Kirkland vitamins have a lot of fillers, too.

Well, we can all agree there are too many unknowns and question
concerning vitamins. Does these test show good results for all
Puritan's Pride Vitamins? What vitamins/supplements are using
ingredients made in China? USP is definitely a great idea, but so is
alternative energy?

What we do know is SOME ingredients are manufacture in China. If you
want to take chances, then enjoy your 70% off vitamins fellow FW(ers).

Supplements Take a Hit
By Brian Lawler February 25, 2008

In what is sure to sadden late-night television commercial
aficionados, on Friday the leaders of the supplement producer best
known for the "smiling Bob" television ads were found guilty of
various charges including fraud.
As reported by the Associated Press, the conviction of the mother and
son team that led the company responsible for producing Enzyte and
other supposedly beneficial supplements and nutraceuticals could land
them behind bars for "more than 20 years" as a result of what
prosecutors described as deceptive advertising, bank fraud, and other
transgressions.

The producers of Enzyte, Ohio-based Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals,
reportedly took in a hundred million dollars as a result of marketing
a less-than-extraordinary set of ingredients as various supplements
like Enzyte. It was allowed to do this because the FDA takes the
opposite approach to supplement producers that it does for
pharmaceutical drugmakers.
Many dietary supplements and other compounds that go by the gimmicky
name of "nutraceuticals" are permitted to be sold by the FDA without
having to prove their benefits or safety as long as they are not
actively marketed as a treatment for a particular indication and use
ordinary ingredients. Unlike pharmaceuticals, which have to be proven
by drugmakers to have a benefit and be relatively safe before they can
be sold, the FDA has the burden of proof to show a supplement is
unsafe before it is allowed to take a supplement off the market.

Supplements are much harder to regulate for the FDA because their
ingredients are often found in everyday foods. Even more confounding,
it's often difficult for the average consumer to separate the
sometimes useful supplements, like the vitamins and minerals doctors
often prescribe for pregnant women, apart from the bad (or at least
money-wasting) ones like Enzyte. According to the FDA, almost 50% of
Americans regularly consume vitamins, herbs, or minerals partly in the
hopes of avoiding "the excessive costs of traditional medical
services."
Publicly traded companies like American Oriental Bioengineering (NYSE:
AOB), Nutraceutical International (NYSE: NUTR), and NBTY (NYSE: NTY)
sell nutritional supplements in different places around the world. No
matter what you think about them, there's big money in selling these
compounds, with the size of the dietary supplement industry estimated
as high as more than $22 billion. Even a few convictions of one
particularly egregious supplement maker in the case of the "Smiling
Bob" marketer isn't likely to have much of an effect on such a large
industry.

shark cartilage

13-Aug-2007 - Batches of shark cartilage capsules originating from the
United States could contain salmonella, the UK Food Standards Agency
has warned.
The capsules, which are largely used for joint health, have been
recalled by US distribution firm NBTY which said it discovered the
"issue" during routine testing of the product.
The recall marks yet another blow to the US supplement market, which
is trying to boost its consumer safety image after it has been delt a
series of blows.

Last month the Texas Attorney General charged supplement manufacturer
Mannatech for illegal marketing. According to the Office of the
Attorney General, exaggerated claims relating to the therapeutic
benefits of Mannatech's dietary supplements and products were used to
unlawfully mislead consumers with cancer, Down's syndrome, cystic
fibrosis and other serious illnesses.
In January, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) set the stage for
unlawful marketing practices involving dietary supplements by fining
four well-known weight-loss pill marketers for $25mn. The settlements
also required the marketers of Xenadrine EFX, One A Day Weight Smart,
Cortaslim and TrimSpa change their ad claims.

It also comes at a time when the country launches Good Manufacturing
Practises (GMPs) - legislation set to boost standards and allow for
inspectors to check purity, safety and legality in manufacturing.
However, a spokesperson for the Council for Responsible Nutrition,
said: "It appears to be a very isolated one off incident," but
declined to comment further.

It is not thought the suspect shark cartilage capsules had gone on
sale in UK shops, but may have been available through internet and
mail order suppliers.
Chondroitin sulphate, one of the most popular supplements for joint
health, is extracted from animal cartilage like shark cartilage. The
supplement is usually sold in combination with glucosamine and,
according to the Nutrition Business Journal, US sales for these
combined supplements were $810m (€132m) in 2005.

While a routine test detected the bacteria, testing on additional
batches of shark cartilage did not show any evidence of contamination.
Dr Judith Hilton, Head of Microbiological Safety at the Food Standards
Agency, said: "The presence of salmonella in a food supplement is
unacceptable and potentially hazardous. It's important that consumers
of these capsules check that their personal supplies are not
affected."

Salmonella is the second-most-common cause of food poisoning. Symptoms
can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. In some
cases, food poisoning can cause very serious illness or even death.
It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children,
frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
However, no illnesses have been reported to date.

The affected shark cartilage capsules were sold under the following
labels Puritan's Pride brand shark cartilage capsules, Nature's Bounty
brand shark cartilage capsules, Rexall Sundown brand shark cartilage
capsules, Vitamin World brand shark cartilage capsules, and Natural
Wealth brand shark cartilage capsules.
