If you are interested in the health care field, but want a position
that doesn't involve patient care, investigate a career as a
Registered Health Information Technician. According to the American
Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Registered Health
Information Technicians (RHITs) perform two general functions: (1)
Ensure that medical records are coded and entered correctly; and (2)
Use computer applications to analyze the data, with a goal of better
patient care or cost reduction. Combined with on-the-job experience or
a bachelor's degree, the RHIT credential is a steppingstone to medical
management positions.

1. Step 1

Find a school with a health information management program.
Several schools across the United States offer associate's degree
or bachelor's degree studies, with online options for some
programs. Bachelor's degree programs may also offer business and
healthcare management coursework.

2. Step 2

Check out the program's accreditation. According to AHIMA, your
health information management program must be accredited by the
Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information
Management Education (CAHIIM). If you are from a country other
than the U.S., you must complete a health information management
program approved by a foreign association that has a reciprocity
arrangement with AHIMA.

3. Step 3

Complete the RHIT exam eligibility requirements. Candidates who
want to take the RHIT exam must complete their programs of study
and have their academic credentials verified. In addition, all
first-time applicants must provide an official transcript from
their academic institution.

4. Step 4

Pass the RHIT exam. To pass the comprehensive RHIT exam,
candidates must thoroughly familiarize themselves with their
health information management course material. Candidates have
several exam preparation resources available to them. AHIMA
provides detailed information on exam logistics, as well as exam
specifications, content that could be covered, and sample
questions.

5. Step 5

Obtain a RHIT position. As a Registered Health Information
Technician, you can adapt your skills to many medical settings,
which may broaden your prospects for employment. According to
AHIMA, RHIT graduates are employed in medical settings that
include hospitals, physicians' practices, nursing homes and
administrative offices.

In your local market, search for health information technology
jobs in your newspaper's Help Wanted pages, as well as within
online job websites. Visit local medical practices with your
credentials and request an interview with the practice manager.
Dress professionally and approach each position as an opportunity
to excel in your field.
