Side Effects of Viagra

Do the Benefits Outweigh the Potential Adverse Effects?

All medicines that humans take have side effects, which is the price
paid to access the beneficial effects of these medications. 
  

Viagra is one - probably the best known - of a group of medications
that are used to treat Erectile Dysfunction.

What is Viagra?

Pharmacologically called Sildenafil, it belongs to a group known as
Phosphodiesterase Five inhibitors (PDE5-Inhibitors) that act in the
human body by inhibiting an enzyme called PhosphoDiesterase 5.
Inhibition of the action of PDE5 causes the arteries carrying blood to
the sexual organs to dilate and so allows satisfactory blood flow to
the penis - blood flow adequate to engorge the penis and result in it
becoming erect.

Viagra is not a medicine that increases a man's sex drive - it only
works if a man is sexually excited - because all it does, basically,
is increase blood flow to the penis to allow it to become erect.

Other drugs in the PDE5 group that are similarly used to help men
achieve satisfactory erections are Taldafil (sold under trade names
such as Cialis,) and Vardenafil (sold under trade names such as
Levitra)

Precautions Before Starting to Take Viagra

If a man is taking any form of nitrate medication - prescribed buy his
doctor to be taken on a regular basis or to be used "if needed" if he
experiences chest pain - he should not consider taking Viagra because
the combination of Viagra and nitrate-like drugs may lead to a severe
fall in blood pressure. Such a precipitous fall could be difficult to
reverse.

Commonly Used Nitrate Medications

Among commonly prescribed such drugs are:

nitrate tablets which help maintain adequate blood flow in the
 heart's blood vessels - oral medicines such as isosorbide nitrate
 or sorbitrate which has various trade names (e.g. Isordil,
 Corangin, Duride, Monodur, Durules, Imtrate) and glyceryl nitrate
 sublingual tablets (known as Anginine, Nitrostat, Lycinate)

nitrate patches that are applied on the skin and used for the same
 purpose, such as Transiderm-Nitro, Nitroderm, Minitran, Nitro-Dur

nitrate sprays taken to relieve angina, such as glyceryn
 trinitrate, nitroglycerin, nitrolingual or GTN spray

illicit drugs such as amyl nitrate ("amyl," "poppers" and "rush")

drugs similar to the nitrates that are prescribed for men with
 coronary heart disease - such as Nicorandil, Ikorel, Nicodil

Side Effects of Viagra

The most common side effects associated with taking VIAGRA are
headache, facial flushing, and upset stomach - and less
commonlyblurring of vision, bluish vision or sensitivity to light.
Rarely a sudden decrease or loss of vision - or a sudden decrease or
loss of hearing, may occur. The manufactiurers claim that it is not
possible to determine whether these symptoms are directly related to
Viagra - but recommend that if a man experiences any of these symptoms
while on Viagra, they should stop taking any more Viagra and consult a
doctor immediately.

What can Prevent Viagra Working Well?

Many factors can affect the efficacy of PDE5 Inhibitors - for example

attempting sexual intercourse too quickly after taking the
 medicine

a high degree of anxiety - especvially when taking the drug for
 the first time

Attempting to have sex without adequate sexual stimulation
 ("foreplay")

consuming too much alcohol or eating too much before sex, as this
 can weaken the response

Sex and Heart DiseaseIt is also important to remember that undertaking
sexual activity can be physically demanding. A man must be physically
fit to have sex! So someone who has not had sex for some time who
suddenly decides to indulge in sexual activity may put an excessive
strain on his heart - which can precipitate a heart attack. Men who
have chest pain or shortness of breath when they exercise and those
receiving treatment for a recently diagnosed heart condition should
avoid taking these drugs. This is best discussed on an individual
basis with their own doctor
