Alcoholism Medical Treatment April 30, 2010

As the year has progressed I have been amazed at the technological
saavy of the teachers and staff involved in education today. Some of
the ideas they have implemented have been phenomenal. One teacher, in
an attempt to teach her students to be concise, had them explicate a
poem using the texting feature on their cell phones which limits them
to 160 characters. They had to figure out what to say concisely and
succinctly. Another teacher was inspired by the “Parisian Kiss”
commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnsSUqgkDwU). Then she assigned the
students a topic and they had to tell a story in the same format. Here
is an example of one story; alcoholism medical treatment.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jujRIEXlP9c).
I am quickly discovering that it is not a matter of money to achieve
greatness; but rather, allowing the rich imaginations of your staff to
imagine the possibilities available in the technology which is already
accessible. Send me some of your outstanding examples of technological
lessons this year. SEARCH ON!!!! – alcoholism medical treatment

Cymbalta Dosage April 10, 2010
------------------------------

Posted by lpearle in : school library month , 1 comment so far
National Poetry Month…

Autism Awareness Month…
School Library Month…

There’s also National Library Week cymbalta dosage, and at Hackley, we
have Book Fair and Grandparents and Special Friends Day. It’s a busy
month, and keeping up with it all is something of a stretch.
Full disclosure: even though I’m a member of the SLM Committee, my
school doesn’t make a big deal about SLM. I think it’s because we know
that our school appreciates the library and is committed to the
program. We know this because they built a new Lower School Library
(opened in 2007) and when the Middle/Upper School Library burned down
(also in 2007), there was no question that we would rebuild and that
any resources we needed to recreate the collection would be made
available. (For the record, we have a great insurance policy). The two
libraries serve a student population of just over 800, with just under
200 in the Lower School (K-4) and the rest in our Middle and Upper
Schools. Additionally, working in an independent school means that we
don’t have to deal with NCLB testing or e-rate filtering. The
community’s concern for us after the fire spoke volume (pardon the
pun). That’s not to say things are perfect, but they are far better for
us than they are for many school libraries in these days of budget
cuts and job uncertainty.

One of the things we struggle with is making the right choices about
which resources we’ll purchase; cymbalta dosage.April is also when
next year’s budget is due, so those thoughts are uppermost in my mind.
Our two biggest line items are books and databases (probably true for
most of us).
The question of which books to purchase is always tricky. There’s the
book that you know everyone is going to love, the Must Have (like
Mockingjay or, in my opinion, Incarceron and Hearts at Stake). Then
there are the books that you read and hear good things about,
potential Newberry/Printz/Caldecott/etc – cymbalta dosage.winners,
which you really should get. There are the series that students can’t
get enough of, like Naruto and the fairy books by Daisy Meadows and
the Ranger’s Apprentice and. – cymbalta dosage..and…and…. Cymbalta
dosage: but then there are those that really call for judgment, and
where that crosses the line to censorship is sometimes difficult. Is it
censoring for our Lower School Librarian to not purchase Twilight for
its shelves (students may borrow books from both libraries, as can
parents)? or for the Middle/Upper School Library to not stock books
that we know our parents will have from their childhood (and are thus
unlikely to circulate)? ALA would have us believe it is, but I think
it’s wisely allocating our budget dollars.

Databases are another touchy issue. There are some that are widely
used, and others that are not used as much by students yet are
invaluable to faculty. EBSCO has entered into exclusive content
agreements, so no matter what we’d like to do we have to keep their
database available. Do we have the best databases in every subject? Do
we provide coverage for our K-12 community? How much will the price
rise this year (one database has notified us of a 19% increase!)? All
this keeps me up at night as I work on our requests for the next
academic year.
For the next four days, our Book Fair will reaffirm Hackley’s
commitment to reading, to the life of the mind, and to the library. It
coincides with National Library Week, and could be considered our
School Library Month celebration. And what better way to celebrate
than with books, books and more books? – cymbalta dosage

Acne Medication Online April 6, 2010
------------------------------------
Posted by kkroese in : Check this out! , 4comments

One of the best things about being involved in an organization like
the AASL is being able to network with other school librarians, don’t
you think? With our professional identities in the throes of a huge
(and necessary) transition, I think it is important for us to reach
out to each other – for comfort, support, ideas and inspiration.
I blog as a newbie, unable to provide much, other than a glimpse into
what someone is willing to do for the job we all love.It should be
noted acne medication online, I am fresh out of Library School; with
the ink barely dry on my diploma I was hired at a charter high school
in the city of Buffalo.

I was excited to become a part of a school with a great educational
philosophy. We are part of the Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward
Bound Organization acne medication online, http://www.elschools.org/.In
fact I was so excited, that when I found out that I was actually going
to be hired through Americorps (making a fraction of what all of my
compatriots were making at their new jobs) I accepted the position
anyway – acne medication online. This school was entering into its
fourth year, and had never had a librarian – or a library, for that
matter – and I would be creating my whole program from scratch – acne
medication online.What an opportunity!
There have been many interesting things that have shaped my first
year; acne medication online.First, there was packing up what was left
of a small but noble collection; acne medication online. It had been
started by two English teachers in the back of a classroom; acne
medication online. There was never anyone or anywhere to check anything
in or out, so many of the books just walked away – acne medication
online. After weeding the donations, I threw out 10 boxes of books.

Then, I found out that the school was going to be housed in a
temporary space for the next year, and it had no cafeteria. The only
space large enough to hold breakfast and lunch was.; acne medication
online..can you guess? The library! Lunch in the library? I’m afraid
so – acne medication online.Three days before school started, I cried;
acne medication online. So far, that has been the only time; acne
medication online.I don’t even notice the smell of the chili and milk
stained carpet anymore. It’s no longer shocking to pull wads of gum,
apple cores, and muffin wrappers out from between the books.
The first 6 weeks of school I had no OPAC; acne medication online.Over
winter break, I switched us from Alexandria to OPALS.There’s a
computer lab approx 12 feet by 14 feet with 18 used Dells, and no
printer. Don’t get me started on the laptop carts – one has 18
computers, the other has 8, and both are missing chargers – acne
medication online. My book scanner is shared with the lunch lady.

I co-teach three different sections of an honors elective: 10th acne
medication online, 11th, and 12th grade.I am also responsible for
creating the Yearbook acne medication online, including taking every
picture that will be in it.Speaking of pictures, I created and
distributed every students’ ID badge. Acne medication online: i have
done my best to ensure every student has a book to read for the 30
minutes of mandatory Sustained Silent Reading we have every day.
I write the monthly newsletter; I ran a week-long cheerleading
workshop.I enlisted a small library student army from UB (three
people) and finally got the almost 1,000 book donations cataloged,
tagged, in the system and on the shelves after 3 months; acne
medication online.I’ve doubled the size of the collection; the
highlight of the year was finding a 3-shelf acne medication online,
two-sided book cart on Craigslist for $150.

I painfully dragged 50 seniors through their first EVER research
paper, and lived to talk about it.Right now I’m doing the same for 80
9th graders, so when they are seniors it won’t be nearly as agonizing;
acne medication online.I just finished a Google Sites tutorial for all
10th Graders, the 11th grade is starting their career investigation
research project – all for the first time and with the help and
guidance of a librarian.
I have colored Easter eggs, deep-fried pickles, chaperoned 10
different trips, went to Albany Lobby Day, and oh yeah, try to check
books in and out. Acne medication online: all without a clerk, aide or
help of any kind except for whatever poor students I can convince to
help me put Kapco covers on my paperbacks or shelf books.

And I’m taking a busload of city kids to meet one of their favorite
authors, Coe Booth, for free at the Rochester Teen Book Festival in
May – they are pumped.
Have I mentioned the smell in there?

And I love every minute of it.
So the lesson here is this: it is not that our profession is changing,
only how we do it. Acne medication online: we’re in the business of
helping people, and the best way we can do that is by doing it
whatever “the best way” is.For now, the best way to help my school is
by doing.; acne medication online..everything; acne medication online.Next
year, who knows? Perhaps once my space is not also the cafeteria and
study hall dumping ground, I won’t have to run around so much.Students
can come to the library instead of the other way around.

Last week, one of the 10th graders said to me “Miss, you’re so much
more than a librarian!” That was almost the second time I cried – acne
medication online. However, he has it backwards; I am not so much more
that a librarian. In reality, librarians are just so much more – acne
medication online.
