Suggest good Vitamin D3 supplement?
Reply Quote

Hello,
I don't know if this is the right section to post this, but I'm
looking for recommendations of a good Vitamin D3 supplement to
take during the winter, about 1000 IU per capsule. Can anyone
suggest a good brand?

Many thanks,
Angela

Hi Angela
Check out Phillip Day's brand: Go to www.credence.org.

I would just like to take this opportunity to spread the word on
Vitamin D and sunlight. It is not sent down as a vitamin by the
sun and absorbed through the skin; it is those 'deadly' u.v. rays
which need to be absorbed through the eyes and processed by the
hypothalamus and the endocrine system which then converts it into
Vit.D in the body. The use of anti-u.v. sunglasses (a gimmick by
very rich sunglasses companies) is therefore detrimental to our
health. We need to be at least an hour out in the sunlight
'bare-eyed' and buy non anti-u.v. sunglasses (yep, the cheaper the
better!). It is the fact that children spend much more time
indoors these days, going from school to car to house, and
unsuspecting parents are putting sunglasses even on babies, which
is creating this surge in lack of Vit.D.
If our eyes weren't meant to be exposed to sunlight, God would
have supplied us with sunglass lens at birth, would He not?

Cheers Heidi

Hi, I've been taking Natures Plus from my local health food shop,
its comes in various iu big tasty crunchy tabs or soft capsules
that you swallow. I found that taking 1000iu straight off made me
a bit tense, so I took a lower dose building up over a few days
and took them at night. The tabs are useful as you can bite then
in half!

I've done a fair amount of research into this, and have not heard
anything about it being absorbed through the eyes, but through the
skin. UV as far as I am aware is detrimental to eye health.
Vitamin D It is only produced by the skin on exposure to a very
narrow band of UV, and tanning beds do not contain this
wavelength.

I'm no expert and I can't even quote where I got that info from
(it's too late at night for me to Google info), but u.v. has
always been in sunlight since Time began, and the wearing of
sunglasses only became commonplace (and trendy) from the middle of
last century. I believe u.v. protected sunglasses are only about
20 years old. I stand to be corrected.

When you think of the Eskimos who are never exposed to the
sunlight except through their eyes and are healthy (were, before
McDonalds caught up with them) my statement has merit. Also
today's children spend comparatively very little time outside, and
I see many concerned mothers putting sunglasses on babies, which I
believe has led to the current upsurge in Vit.D. lack. Adults,
too, slap on u.v. protected sunglasses the minute they step
outside. Research - or reading - is incredibly subjective, it all
depends on who is paying whom to prove a point. I'll do some
research of my own and get back to you with some names....

I've never heard of vitamin D being absorbed through the eyes.
Many people who wear sunglasses also put on sunscreen, so it would
be difficult to research properly.

I think the Inuits have probably evolved to deal with that level
of sunlight, as those who went snowblind wouldnt live long enough
to breed. Ditto their ability to deal with cold - I've seen film
of them working outdoors in T-shirts with bare hands.

Each 100iu/daily vitamin D3 raises status by about 1ng or
2.5nmol/l

1000iu/daily can only raise status 10ng/ml or 25nmol/l That is
assuming you have nothing wrong with you that causes inflammation.
If you are obese, have celiac or any other inflammatory condition,
you will require more vitamin D3 to achieve the same result. In
practice most UK adults have levels around 25nmol/l at this time
of year. The vitamin D level associated with least chronic disease
incidence is 137.5nmol/l so just 1000iu/daily vitamin D3 will have
little or no impact.
I personally use

Healthy Origins, Vitamin D3, 5,000 IU, 360 Softgels
If you haven't used an effective amount of Vitamin D3 before then
you may get better results with the higher strength version
Healthy Origins, Vitamin D3, 10,000 IU, 360 Softgels Ideally you
need 1000iu/daily for each 25lbs you weigh.

I would suggest initially, because we are now in the UK in the
middle of winter and it will be 3months before we get Vitamin D
from sunshine, that you start with the 10,000iu/daily and then
after 8~12 weeks have a http://www.grassrootshealth.net/daction
25(OH)D postal vitamin D test to check you have raised your status
to above 55ng/ml or more than 137.5nmol/l.,
