Synopsis of publication:
------------------------

The NHMRC has issued guidelines in the form of the Joint statement and
recommendations on vitamin K administration to newborn infants to
prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding in infancy to newborns. New
guidelines are issued following Roche Australia's decision to alter
the vitamin K preparation Konakion to a new formulation called
Konakion MM Paediatric. The new product is manufactured in a different
concentration and is dissolved in more natural fluid that assists
absorption.
The guidelines recommend that all newborn infants should receive
vitamin K prophylaxisand receive an intramuscular injection of 1mg
(0.1ml) of Konakion MM at birth.

The guidelines also recommend that parents receive written information
during the antenatal period about the importance of vitamin K, and the
options of intramuscular or oral treatments.
